FAQ's for H38

Why do H38 hinges have stainless steel pins?
The pivot axle or 'pin' of each H38 hinge is manufactured from stainless steel to provide a more durable hinge and stainless steel better resists the effects of adverse weather conditions.

How often should H38 hinges be greased?
Lubrication - preferably a marine grease - is required at least every 6 months, even if the door or gate to which the hinges are fitted is "hardly ever used". Grease degrades over time, especially in hot and wet climates, and the maintenance operation of pumping fresh grease into each hinge also helps expel any moisture within a hinge.

How many H38 hinges should be installed to a gate or door?
A minimum of 2 hinges must be installed to a gate or door with each grease nipple uppermost. For doors and gates more than 2500mm high it is prudent to consider installing 3 hinges.

How much weight will H38 hinges support?
The nominal mass of a door or gate to which a pair of H38 hinges may be installed is 300Kg. Fitting 3 or more hinges does not increase that nominal mass. Additional hinges work to keep a high door or gate in a better operational alignment as the door or gate swings on the hinges.

Why are H38 hinge flaps curved?
The flaps fitted to H38 hinges are a registered design that enables installers and fabricators to weld each flap with a continuous weld that enables stronger attachment of a flap to a stile or jamb or post and will generally enables a cleaner finish to be produced.
